Latest reflections
One of the notable trends in the latest week’s data is the irresistible rise of careers in Data Analysis and Data Science, with a further 25 vacancies added. It really does seem to be all about Data these days and yet how frequently does this theme come up in careers guidance conversations I wonder?
It reinforces my feeling that the occupational analyses in my weekly blog provide an increasingly useful menu of emerging careers in a post-COVID landscape.
Geographically-speaking, nowhere stood out in Week 73 but the West Midlands was the most prominent county outside London. Hence, one of my Birmingham impressions gets the nod for this week’s photographic image.
Background
Since the first ‘lockdown’ started on Monday 23rd March 2020, I’ve kept a record of new higher and degree apprenticeship vacancies posted in England and in doing so have built up an evolving occupational and regional analysis. I largely use data extracted every week from the government’s ‘Find an apprenticeship’ website, whilst also keeping an eye on other national vacancy sources including NHS Jobs.
I only include vacancies that ‘work-ready’ 18/19-year-olds seeking their first permanent role could reasonably apply for, whether at the point of leaving school/college or after a few months of temporary experience. If a year or more’s permanent experience is clearly required, I don’t include the vacancy in my data.
When recording multiple vacancies posted by some of the larger employers, I occasionally use an element of editorial licence by making conservative estimates of numbers which I adjust retrospectively if more precise data comes to light. Therefore, the figures I present each week will never be fully reliable. However, the broad trends and analyses provide some powerful LMI that I personally find immensely useful in my guidance and school/college presentations.
Headline data
During the latest period, from 9th to 15th August 2021, I recorded:
- 61 new Degree & Level 7 Apprenticeship vacancies and
- 128 new Higher Apprenticeship vacancies
In the 73 weeks since the start of lockdown (23rd March 2020 to 15th August 2021) I’ve now recorded:
- 5,985 new Degree & Level 7 Apprenticeships and 5,600 new Higher Apprenticeships, giving a total of 11,585
Using the 70 weeks either side of the initial COVID-19 lockdown (on 23/3/20) as a benchmark, my latest comparative figures are as follows:
- Weekly average in the 70 weeks before lockdown: 82 DAs + 71 HAs = 153 total
- Weekly average in the 70 weeks after lockdown: 84 DAs + 75 HAs = 159 total
- Weekly average in the 73 weeks after lockdown: 82 DAs + 77 HAs = 159 total
This suggests that DAs are reasonably steady, but with a customary summer vacation lull, while HAs are gradually on the rise.
Updated regional analysis
The 11,585 higher and degree apprenticeships advertised in England since the start of lockdown have been distributed as follows:
- Greater London (2,537)
- Yorkshire (1,094)
- West Midlands (734)
- Greater Manchester (592)
- Bristol & Gloucestershire (493)
- Hampshire (483)
- Berkshire (382)
- Hertfordshire (339)
- Surrey (300)
- Nottinghamshire (266)
- Lancashire (251)

- Devon (163)
- Cumbria (159)
- Kent (151)
- County Durham (142)

- Staffordshire (140)
- Wiltshire (138)
- Northamptonshire (136)
- Buckinghamshire (128)
- Dorset (121)
- Derbyshire (118)

- Isle of Wight (32)

- Cornwall (19)
- Northumberland (11)
- Rutland (1)
- Not specified (22)
The following list shows how those stats add up regionally. In brackets I’ve included the total population of each region using the latest ONS data rounded to the nearest 1,000, which gives a sense of proportion to the apprenticeship figures. For example, in population terms the North East is by far the smallest region, so the differences in apprenticeship numbers are not as disproportionate as they might appear. As a way of quantifying this a little further, I’ve added an extra stat in bold which indexes the apprenticeship figures against the total population of each region. In effect, the index equals the number of DAs and HAs post-lockdown per 10,000 of total population.
- 2,537 London (8,962,000: 2.83)
- 1,817 South East (9,180,000: 1.98)
- 1,432 North West (7,341,000: 1.95)
- 1,266 West Midlands (5,934,000: 2.13)
- 1,184 East of England (6,236,000: 1.90)
- 1,094 Yorkshire & Humber (5,503,000: 1.99)
- 1,075 South West (5,625,000: 1.91)
- 762 East Midlands (4,836,000: 1.58)
- 396 North East (2,670,000: 1.48)
