Week 188: Degree & Higher Apprenticeship data 2020 to 2023 – Hospitality makes a comeback

Latest reflections on the situation in England

Following last week’s revamp, when my cumulative data was extended by backdating it to the beginning of 2020, Week 188 was quiet but not without its highlights. August is always the slowest month of the year, but things were livened up this week by the posting of 18 Chartered Manager DAs in London by four prominent hotel groups, namely Red Carnation (6 places), Dorchester (6), Park Plaza (4) and Marriott (2). With a common starting salary of £21,757, their programmes also all follow a similar pattern and include weekend and shift work along with a study day on Wednesdays to follow a BA in Applied Hospitality Management in partnership with the University of Gloucestershire.

The hotel DAs prompted me to track back over my past data and to re-introduce Hotel & Hospitality Management as a DA occupation in its own right. Hospitality Management already figured quite prominently in my HA listings, but up to now I’d just absorbed any Hospitality DAs into my Chartered Management numbers as they’d been quite infrequent during the pandemic and its aftermath. However, now that I’ve differentiated them, they’ve moved up into my top 40 DA occupations and become a force to be reckoned with. This is one of the reasons I enjoy doing my blog, as I like the dynamic way in which the data is always evolving.

There was an extra dimension to all this because last November I had the privilege of attending the Career Development Institute’s lunch for past presidents and fellows at The Rubens at the Palace in London, which by coincidence is one of the hotels in Red Carnation’s collection. Hence, as well as dusting off a photo of our local Marriott (taken while staying there for a function a few years ago) and using it as this week’s featured image, I’ve also taken the liberty to slip in a photo of me outside the Rubens last year. LMI in action!

There’s another positive development in the pipeline too. In the last few weeks some trusted colleagues have responded enthusiastically to the infographic produced by Career Guidance Charts based on my latest report on Graduate Apprenticeships in Scotland. Well, we’re now on the case regarding an England DA/HA infographic and hope to have something soon that represents highlights from my England data. Watch this space!

With the infographic partly in mind, I’ve also made another tweak to my DA data this week by bringing the different Chartered Surveyor specialisms all together into one category, but still breaking them down in a similar way to my Healthcare Science and Nursing data. I think this adds more prominence and clarity to an important occupational area.

And finally, I always like to see new vacancies pop up in locations that don’t often feature and this week’s crop included three Engineering DAs in Wimborne (Dorset), an Operating Department Practitioner DA in Hereford, a Digital Marketing DA in Kirkham (on the Fylde Peninsula in Lancashire) and a Countryside Ranger HA in Bampton (Cumbria). For such a quiet week, there’s been plenty of activity to report.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland updates

Having also tracked vacancies in the three other home nations since 1st June 2022, my latest running totals are as follows:

  • Scotland656 vacancies at SQF Levels 10/11
  • Wales110 vacancies at Levels 6/7 and 150 at Levels 4/5
  • Northern Ireland122 vacancies at Levels 4 to 7

It’s my intention to continue posting quarterly reports for Scotland and Wales, with the next updates due in early-September.

Background

Since the start of the decade in January 2020 I’ve kept a record of new degree and higher apprenticeship vacancies posted in England and in doing so have built up an evolving occupational and regional analysis. I largely use data extracted daily from the government’s ‘Find an Apprenticeship’ website, whilst also keeping tabs on other national vacancy sources especially Not Going to Uni, Rate My Apprenticeship, Get My First Job and NHS Jobs.

My target audience is Level 3 school and college leavers and those who influence and advise them. Therefore, I only include vacancies at Levels 4 to 7 that ‘work-ready’ 18/19-year-olds seeking their first permanent role could reasonably apply for, whether at the point of leaving school/college or after a few months of temporary experience. If more than a year’s permanent experience is clearly required, I don’t normally include the vacancy in my figures.

I would emphasise the term ‘work-ready’ because academic qualifications alone will never be enough to compete successfully for a higher or degree apprenticeship. Whilst a UCAS points score of 112 is the most frequently quoted minimum entry requirement for DAs (sometimes more and often less), it’s otherwise much more about the skills, qualities and insights an applicant can bring.

My data will never be fully reliable because not all vacancies are advertised nationally in a way that also gives an indication of actual numbers and locations. However, I think the analyses I’ve built up still paint an intriguing picture of what’s out there in a changing post-18 career landscape. The figures also suggest that there’s something of a mismatch between supply and demand in terms of volume (there aren’t enough to go around), location (my regional breakdown raises questions about ‘levelling up’) and the range of occupations available (which probably doesn’t align too well with student aspirations, thereby ironically leaving some vacancies hard to fill).

One further and slightly confusing factor to take into account is that it’s quite normal for some 18/19-year-old school/college leavers to apply for Level 3 apprenticeships too. It’s also true that a significant proportion of opportunities at Levels 4 to 7 will be snapped up by older applicants or even graduates and therefore work-readiness really matters to enable 18/19-year-olds to compete successfully.

Headline data

In England during the latest period from 31st July to 6th August 2023 I recorded:

  • 32 new Degree & L7 Apprenticeship vacancies and
  • 74 new Higher Apprenticeship vacancies
  • giving a total of 106 for the week

In the 188 weeks from 1st January 2020 to 6th August 2023 I’ve now recorded:

  • 24,986 new Degree Apprenticeships (Levels 6/7) and
  • 21,389 new Higher Apprenticeships (Levels 4/5)
  • giving a total of 46,375

The average weekly totals across all 188 weeks have been:

  • 133 DAs + 114 HAs = 247 average weekly total

Updated analysis by county and region

By county (loosely defined) the 46,375 higher and degree apprenticeships advertised in England since January 2020 have been distributed as follows:

  • Greater London (10,980)
  • Yorkshire (4,177)
  • West Midlands (2,940)
  • Greater Manchester (2,555)
  • Bristol & Gloucestershire (2,105)
  • Hampshire (1,568)
  • Berkshire (1,485)
  • Surrey (1,106)
  • Hertfordshire (1,090)
  • Cheshire (983)
  • Tyne & Wear (917)
  • Derbyshire (908)
  • Nottinghamshire (868)
  • Sussex (837)
  • Cambridgeshire (827)
  • Essex (793)
  • Merseyside (747)
  • Suffolk (711)
  • Devon (710)
  • Lancashire (687)
  • Somerset & South Bristol (655)
  • Warwickshire (630)
  • Cumbria (622)
  • Kent (622)
  • Buckinghamshire (618)
  • Wiltshire (565)
  • Leicestershire (561)
  • Dorset (558)
  • Staffordshire (554)
  • Oxfordshire (546)
  • Bedfordshire (501)
  • County Durham (465)
  • Northamptonshire (399)
  • Cornwall (373)
  • Worcestershire (352)
  • Norfolk (345)
  • Lincolnshire (317)
  • Shropshire (301)
  • Northumberland (69)
  • Isle of Wight (68)
  • Herefordshire (55)
  • Rutland (14)
  • Remote-working with no central base (74)
  • Not specified (117)

Regional data: The table below shows how those stats add up regionally in the context of the local 15 to 24-year-old population. The population figures have been extracted from the latest ONS census data published in June 2022 and my analysis provides the following information:

  • First number in bold = the latest cumulative number of vacancies for each region
  • Big number in brackets = the resident population of 15 to 24-year-olds in the region using the latest ONS data rounded to the nearest 100
  • Third figure in bold indexes my apprenticeship figures against the 15 to 24-year-old population. The ‘index’ shows the combined number of DAs and HAs since January 2020 per 1,000 of that population and the regions are then ‘ranked’ accordingly:
  • 10,980   London (1,078,600: 10.18)
  •   4,966   South West (645,800: 7.69)
  •   4,838   West Midlands (720,900: 6.71)
  •   6,850   South East (1,040,500: 6.58)
  •   5,592   North West (884,600: 6.32)
  •   4,179   Yorkshire & The Humber (670,800: 6.23)
  •   4,267   East of England (685,300: 6.23)
  •   2,986   East Midlands (593,700: 5.03)
  •   1,524   North East (313,000: 4.87)
  •        74   Remote-working
  •      119   Not specified
  • 46,375   Total England (6,633,200: 6.99)

Whilst my data is always going to have flaws in it, I think the above comparisons give a fair reflection of the regional differences that exist. The South West’s prominence is perhaps surprising, with Bristol being a particularly busy hub.
